About the Show
Life on Mars is an Emmy-nominated television drama about Sam Tyler, an NYPD detective who is hit by a car while investigating a murder in 2008, and upon waking up,  mysteriously finds himself transported back in time to 1973.

Sam returns to the 125th precinct where he is assigned and finds everything has changed. His computer and cell phone are missing, and he is driving a vintage 1970's Chevelle. Yet somehow, everyone is expecting him at the 125, as a transfer from upstate Hyde Park, NY.

Confused and in culture shock, Sam tries to explain his situation to some befuddled co-workers who dismiss him as a nut case.

Sam eventually settles in at the 125 and begins working on a series of cases. But in addition to solving crimes, Sam struggles with visions and cryptic messages, meets his mother, father and young self in 1973, and desperately fights to understand why he finds himself here and how he can find his way home.

ABC's Life on Mars is based on the original BBC / Kudos Entertainment production of Life on Mars, which aired between January 2006 and April 2007 in the UK.

The BBC original spun off a new series called Ashes to Ashes, where a female detective, Alex Drake, is shot and inexplicably finds herself in 1981. Having known about Sam Tyler's mystery, she strives to make sense of why she too finds herself thrown into the past.

The first and second series of Ashes to Ashes have aired, and a third and final series has been announced, with a potential air-date starting in April 2010.
